Week 9 Story: The Big Three

The Big Three

There once were three friends whose friendship was inseparable. Although from different families, everyone mistook them for being siblings. They were the same age, always were together, and never let anything - or anyone - get in their way. Their names were Jack, Jaguar, and Jillian. It always felt weird for Jillian to be the only girl in the group, but considering how close they were, gender had no effect on their relationship.

One day they had all decided to go on a hike, together of course. They would never do anything alone, or even in groups of three. It was all or nothing when it came to The Big Three, as people would call them.

Jack packed the snacks, Jaguar packed the tent and camping materials, while Jillian mapped the trail. Although they did everything together, they mostly stuck to what they were best at. Jack always wanted to be a chef growing up, and his dream was to go to culinary school. All the while, Jaguar wanted to explore the world, and every trip taken together was persuaded by Jaguar to go camping, including this trip. Jillian, on the other hand, was known to be the smartest of the three. She dreamed to go to medical school to fulfill her dream of becoming a psychiatrist. How would they decide to go their separate ways in their futures was beyond them. For now, all that lay ahead was their hiking trip.

And so they went. After being persuaded by Jaguar to choose their trail in a deep, and seemingly dangerous forest, they began their journey. All was going well, until night fell. Jack was ready to cook dinner and bring out the snacks, but he needed Jaguar to pick some berries, something his adventurous was good at, while Jillian accompanied him to find the best spot for the berries by tracking the trail.

Suddenly, for the first time in a long time, Jack was alone. He knew they were only going to be gone for a few minutes, so he did not worry.

Suddenly, out of the dark came the biggest bear he had ever seen, really the only bear he had ever seen, and it could speak. It demanded he gave him their food or Jack would be no more. Without an option, Jack handed it all over, and the bear left him, sparing him. Within minutes, Jaguar and Jillian had returned. They were told of what happened, and finished the first day without a dinner.

As the next day passed and came to an end, Jack knew he had to find a way to cook for the team. In order to make it happen, he went with Jillian to salvage what they could possibly find out in the forest.

In mere seconds after they had left, the bear found Jaguar alone and demanded he give him everything he had. Upset from the night before, Jaguar created a trap for this same situation. As the bear approached him, Jaguar pulled the rope on the trap he had built and captured the bear. The others hurried back quickly and noticed what was happening. As they were celebrating their victory over the bear, the trap became loose and the bear escaped. Out of fear, they handed everything they had over to the bear as he spared their lives.

The next morning, the Big Three knew they had to devise a plan to combat the bear, who they eventually realized would return. Jack prepared a delicious snack to lure the bear with the last of their supplies and his culinary skills; Jaguar perfected a new trap, one that led to a dangerous pitfall; Jillian mapped the bear's movements by tracking the paw-prints left by him.

As the night approached, the bear arrived. Not knowing what was happening, the bear fell (quite literally) for the tasty snack, into the deep hole that was Jaguar's pitfall. They worked quickly to trap the bear and bring him to his demise.

They once again realized that whatever they did, they did best together.

--- Author's Note ---

My story is based on The Three Friends. It is actually very similar in that three friends came together to outsmart the enemy. What I wanted to focus on my story, however, was the power of their friendship and each of their skills. In the story I read, each of the animals had their unique skill that I felt like the author did not focus on. For example, the monkey was smart, allowing him to be the last one to survive. I also wanted all of them to succeed, rather than just the monkey. I wanted to emphasize that it is extremely effective for people to put their heads together to achieve a common goal and to work together.

With that, I wanted to keep the story similar somewhat similar because I enjoyed the plot and how the author came up with it. I just wanted to tweak some things in order to fit it into more of my style, which was group success and also to focus on each character and their traits more.

  1. Hi Z, I think you did a great job on this story! I like how you took the three friends and turned them into human characters while keeping the stories antagonist as animals. The flow of this story was really good and made it an easy read. I like the over arching theme that you were able to highlight how when everyone works together to accomplish the goal that it is easier than doing things alone.

  2. Hello Z! So nice to meet you. I enjoyed reading your story, The Big Three, I thought it was creative and something fun to read. I think you have a few too many commas in some of your sentences. Maybe work on using semi colons or just making some of those points sentences versus using a comma. I like how you recreated your own version of The Three Friends. These stories are both cute and a fun read. Great job.
