Week 11 Story: Getting Used to It

Image
Getting Used to It     When things happen again and again to an individual, they become used to the action. When you first enter an odd-smelling room and notice the pungent scent, you eventually get used to it. When you move to a new school in a new state, unable to make friends and seem to succumb to the loneliness, you eventually get used to it. When Aunt Jennifer brings the same green bean casserole every Thanksgiving, you eventually get used to it.      The same goes for receiving. You never realize how much you take for granted until you realize that you are always being given to, because you eventually got used to it.     It was always easy for Max to see the world in a positive light because he always got what he wanted. The newest toys on Christmas, more money than he could store for his birthday. His family even celebrated Thanksgiving like it was called "Maxgiving", because it seemed like he was always asked what he wanted cooked for h...

Week 9 Story: The Big Three

Image
The Big Three  There once were three friends whose friendship was inseparable. Although from different families, everyone mistook them for being siblings. They were the same age, always were together, and never let anything - or anyone - get in their way. Their names were Jack, Jaguar, and Jillian. It always felt weird for Jillian to be the only girl in the group, but considering how close they were, gender had no effect on their relationship.  One day they had all decided to go on a hike, together of course. They would never do anything alone, or even in groups of three. It was all or nothing when it came to The Big Three, as people would call them. Jack packed the snacks, Jaguar packed the tent and camping materials, while Jillian mapped the trail. Although they did everything together, they mostly stuck to what they were best at. Jack always wanted to be a chef growing up, and his dream was to go to culinary school. All the while, Jaguar wanted to explore the world, and eve...

Week 7 Story: The Prideful Man

Image
The Prideful Man There once was a humble man named Thertle who tried to appreciate all parts of his life. This wasn't easy to do for him, because he did not have much that he felt he could appreciate. He was a high school drop out, his family had lost contact with him, and he had virtually no friends. That is, unless you can count Miss Goose from the famous "two-flavor" ice cream parlor, but she was friends with everyone. He wanted what she had. Not in a greedy, envious way, but in an honest way. She knew everyone, and was loved by everyone, she had a business, a family, a stable income. And most importantly, she loved life. One day, like a turtle coming out of its shell, Thertle gained the guts to approach Miss Goose in a way that led to something other than small talk. He wanted to ask how he could get started with restarting life so he could learn to appreciate it like she did.  "Miss Goose, how can I be like you? You're loving, successful, and have a family...

Week 5 Story: The Students & Teacher's Assistant

Image
There were once three students at the University of Oklahoma that went by the names Study, Studying, and Studied. They were all engineering majors who struggled with their majors. That is, except for, Studied. He had studied long and hard for his degree and had made it to graduate school and was commissioned as a teacher's assistant.  The other two, Study and Studying had their final year as Seniors left before they would be able to join their friend Studied. The only thing stopping them was the final exam in Calculus V. Study and Studying could only think about how close they were to finishing. They knew about the exam coming up, but were blinded with joy that they were about to finally about to graduate. Studied begged and begged them to study hard for their final exam, and even offered to help them study with his studying tricks to make sure that they would be able to pass. Alas, Study and Studying ignored him and continued to plan parties and celebrate early for their graduatio...

Week 2 Story: What Do You Want to be When You Grow up?

Image
What Do You Want to be When You Grow up? It was Senior year for Ben. The most exciting year in high school for any student getting through the hell that was high school. For Ben, it was another year in hell.  He was excited to graduate, most definitely, but this was just another year in high school, nothing special. When people asked him why, it was because he was constantly asked the infamous line to anyone in their final years of high school: "what do you want to be when you grow up?" or the student version: "what are you going to major in???" He didn't know. More importantly, he didn't care. He was just going to going to following his father's footsteps of being an accountant. The most straightforward, bland, version of what anyone could do for the rest of their life as a career, at least to him. And so the months sailed by, month after month, week after week, and day after day, the same question echoed both within him in his mind, and in his surround...

Week 3 Story: The Final Exam

Image
The leaves on the trees had began to fall, the wind began to feel like daggers piercing the skin, and most important of all, the final exams approached. It was nearing the end of the Fall semester at The University of Oklahoma. Not a student was in sight, as many were nestled away in their dorms from the outside cold preparing for the final exams. Winter break was right around the corner! They had sailed their journey for as long as they could remember, and soon they would reap the fruits of their labor: no homework, no studying, and even Christmas! But one thing stood in their way from all this happiness: final exams. Thus, the students began relentlessly studying. Although they were so close to being free, they needed to go out with a bang, which was a spot on the President's honor roll; and so they studied. Everyone was in it together. Close friends helped one another. People made new friends and study-buddies and doubled up on their methods of studying. It was one for all, and ...
